Meeting Minutes 9-8-2010

Posted by eapatton in general, minutes

At the first club meeting of the semester we saw a lot of new faces and planned some great events for the rest of the semester! We already have a lot coming up, so if you couldn’t make it or didn’t write everything down, here’s what we discussed:

General club updates:

  • We will hold meetings on Mondays at 8:30 from here on out. The next one will be on September 27th for a game night! This is just going to be a laid-back meeting to get to know each other better, so if you’ve been waiting to get involved this is a great time for it! This will be in Union Stateroom 2 (near the food court).
  • Anyone is welcome to show up to club meetings/events but if you want to be an official member of the club you need to pay a $5 due and show up to at least one club activity. Having members allows our club to do more and get funding for conferences throughout the year.
  • If you would like an Anthropology t-shirt from last year, we still have some for sale for $15!
  • We now have a club wiki!! Anyone in the club can edit this page whenever they like. It will be a very useful site for us to interact more easily: http://ksuanthroclub.wetpaint.com/.

Upcoming Events:

  • On Wednesday, September 22nd we will be having a meet and greet event in Waters 201A. This will be an informal opportunity to get to know other Anthropology majors and professors and to welcome our new professor, Dr. Falcone, to K-State! A few students will be talking about their Anthro-related summer experiences as well. Aaaaand there will be food.
  • We are planning a club camp-out on September 25th, but no details set yet.
  • Finally, we are holding a book sale as a club fundraiser on September 30th and October 1st. We’ll have a table set up in Bosco Plaza from 8am-1pm both days and we need volunteers to take shifts! Go to the wiki to sign up for a shift.
  • All of these events already are or will shortly be on our Facebook page, so check that out!

Conferences! These are a great opportunity to meet other Anthropologists, learn more about the fields you are interested in, or even present your own research. And they’re always a ton of fun to travel to. I will create Facebook events for each of these so that those who want to attend can get registered and make travel plans. Some are sooner than others, but here’s a heads up for all the ones coming up in this year:

  • Plains Anthropological Conference – This will be October 6th-9th in Bismarck, North Dakota. This conference is focused on Archaeology, but there will also be presentations related to other Anthro fields. More information: http://www.ou.edu/cas/archsur/plainsanth/meeting/meeting.htm. You can also talk with Professor Ritterbush if this seems like something you’d be interested in!
  • American Folklore Society (AFS) Annual Meeting – This will be October 13th-16th in Nashville, Tennessee. More information here (http://www.afsnet.org/annualmeet/index.cfm) or talk with Professor Kershner if you’re interested!
  • American Anthropological Association (AAA) Annual Meeting – This conference is being held in New Orleans November 17th-21st. Some Anthro students are already planning to attend this conference on the 20th and 21st. If you would like to go, it would be a good idea register as a member on AAA’s website (http://www.aaanet.org/membership/join.cfm) so that you can get a reduced price for the conference. Here’s the conference page: http://www.aaanet.org/meetings/.
  • Central States Anthropological Society (CSAS) Annual Meeting – This will be April 7th-9th in Iowa City, Iowa. This conference is usually pretty well attended by members of the club and will probably get funding. Here’s information on the conference: http://www.creighton.edu/groups/csas/annualmeeting/index.php. We’ll plan more for this later on!

Sorry this was so long! We look forward to getting to know more people throughout the semester and year! Please talk to/email any of the officers if you ever have questions/suggestions/whatever.

Digital Ethnography releases first video of 2010

Posted by Prof Wesch in anthro news

Check out the new video from the Digital Ethnography class of 2010, a “flash mob of kindness” to promote K-State Proud.

Every dollar donated to Proud goes toward student scholarships, most of which helps students stay in school when all of their other resources are tapped out. Over the past 3 years, students have donated over $250,000 to keep their fellow students in school when they need it most, like when their house has been taken by a tornado, their belongings have been taken by a flood, or when a serious illness drains them of their last dollar and the will to go on. Most importantly, it even helps those students who are perpetually struggling financially to stay at K-State. You can read more about the project at Professor Wesch’s blog.

Meeting Minutes 1.28.10

Posted by sbrooks in anthro news

We had an excellent turnout at our first club meeting of 2010!! It was lovely to see so many new faces and we hope to meet many more of you as the semester continues! Listed below are the main topics discussed at the meeting:

Conferences:
If you are planning on attending one of the three conferences listed below (SALSA;CSAS;SAA), you MUST send Danielle your confirmation by Wednesday, Feb. 3. We need a final headcount by this date as we are trying to acquire funding (which is always a BIG help to student pocketbooks) for these trips. Information about these conferences can be found below as well as on our AnthClub facebook page.

Next Club Meeting:
Our next club meeting will take place on Thursday, Feb. 25 at Hannah’s house (directions can be found on the facebook page) from 8-10pm. The plan is to take care of any necessary “club stuff” before spending a relaxing evening getting to know new faces (of which we hope to see many!), munching on snacks, and taking full advantage of Hannah’s RockBand.

Informational Session:
The AnthClub is hosting an Archeology Field School Informational Session on Thursday, Feb. 4 from 2:30-3:30. We will be meeting in Waters 329 to hear some fellow anthros (Greta Kliewer, Kale Yoder, and Christy Mog) talk about their previous field school experience. Professor Logan will also be available to discuss the KSU Archaeological Field School taking place this summer in Leavenworth, Kansas. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about anthropological field schools and to hear about the first hand experience of our fellow students!

Telefund:
It’s that time of the year again! The KSU Telefund will be taking place at the Union on Thursday, Feb. 11 from 5-9:30pm. The Telefund has been a KSU tradition since 1980 and, according the the KSU Foundation, is “the largest all-volunteer student calling program for higher education.” The Telefund provides an opportunity to connect with alumni and friends while at the same time helping to collect donations to be used towards student programs and support. We are still looking for 6-8 more individuals to help out with this event. If your available/interested, please contact Professor Wesch and let him know.

Upcoming Events:
We have a TON of upcoming events this semester! Please see the list below or check out our AnthClub facebook page for more information. Other event ideas brought up at the meeting included Atlatl throwing with Professor Ritterbush and Professor Logan, Flint Knapping, a workout/dance lesson from the Yosakoi Dance Group (http://ksuyosakoi.wordpress.com/), and a trip to the theatre for the upcoming movie Babies, which follows the lives of four babies from four different countries and very different cultural backgrounds. As usual, we are always excited to hear suggestions and ideas for club activities and events. Please contact any of the club officers if you have any you’d like to share!

Sapiens Symposium–call for paper submissions!

Posted by dvaughn in anthro news

For the fourth year in a row, the Anthropology Club will host the Sapiens
Symposium. We are asking all interested undergraduate students to
submit abstracts to dvaughn@ksu.edu by Friday, March 5. This event
has been great in the past, and we hope to make this year another
fantastic one! If you don’t know what the Sapiens Symposium is, here is
a description from previous years:

The Sapiens Symposium is an event dedicated to a collaboration of
student knowledge concerning issues of human experience and
interaction. Through the exchange of wisdom, the Sapiens Symposium
serves as a platform for like-minded individuals to present and discuss
topics that each find important to their respective field of study. It
is in the hopes of its organizers that the Sapiens Symposium will
cultivate an increased awareness of and tolerance for the many facets
of the human condition in a global village.

What are the benefits of presenting at the Sapiens Symposium?
* The Sapiens Symposium is a great opportunity to gain experience
presenting your own research to your peers and distinguished
professionals.

* It is also a great opportunity to put the final touches on your research for
those considering presenting at the Central States Anthropological
Society conference in April in Madison, Wisconsin or
submitting their paper for the Anthropology department’s Ibn Battuta award.

* You will have a unique chance for your peers and faculty to comment on
your research in an open atmosphere of constructive criticism, offering
suggestions for improvement and comments on excellence.

Open to ALL Anthropology, American Ethnic Studies, International
Studies, Cultural Studies, and Women’s Studies Majors.

WHEN: Tuesday, March 23, 2010
WHERE: Waters Hall–Room 137 2:30-4:30pm
WHO: Sponsored by the KSU Anthropology Club.
Abstract/paper proposal deadline: Friday, March 5 (email to dvaughn@ksu.edu).

**There are no stipulations on content, as long as it is relevant to any
area of the human condition. Also, ALTERNATIVE MEDIA PRESENTATIONS ARE
WELCOME. THE CONFERENCE IS NOT SOLELY LIMITED TO RESEARCH PAPER
PRESENTATIONS. (e.g., video documentaries & digital ethnographies,
website presentations, etc. Be creative!)**

If anyone belongs to the American Ethnic Studies,
International Studies, Cultural Studies, and/or Women’s Studies
listservs or departments, please feel free to forward this message
onward.

Welcome Back Anthros!!

Posted by sbrooks in anthro news

Welcome back! Hope everyone had a good winter break. The Anthropology Club has a TON of upcoming events this semester which we are all very excited to share with you!! Listed below are a few of the major events (courtesy of Danielle’s email sent out earlier this week):

Activities Carnival
When: Thursday January 21st from 6-8 pm
Where: 2nd floor of the Union
What: This is our chance to tell people why our club is awesome and to recruit new members! Also, we will have the anthro club t-shirts available, so if you haven’t had a chance to buy one ($15) yet this is one opportunity to do so.
Other: I have actually had plenty of people already volunteer to help out, but if you’d like to help we definitely won’t say no :) If you’d prefer to just stop by and say ‘hi’ that is great too! We’ll have candy (this should be incentive in itself)!!

1st Club Meeting of Spring 2010
When: Thursday January 28th from 8 pm — whenever you want to leave (no later than 10).
Where: Kale Yoder’s apartment–1122 Kearny (Apt 15)
What: We will be discussing and brainstorming other upcoming events. Once that is done, get ready to jam out to some Beatles Rock Band and hang out/get to know one another. Feel free to bring snacks!

International Potluck
When: Friday February 12th from 6-8 pm
Where: Frith Community Center (Jardine)
What: A relaxing time to mingle with other club members and our wonderful Professors. Bring your favorite international dish to share! Be creative! And feel free to bring friends!

CONFERENCES

SALSA–Symposium about Language and Society

SAA–Society for American Archaeology
When: April 14-18
Where: St. Louis, Missouri
What: The 75th Anniversary meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. This is essential for students wishing to pursue a career in archaeology. More information can be found here: http://www.saa.org/AbouttheSociety/AnnualMeeting/tabid/138/Default.aspx

*Registration forms for SALSA and CSAS conferences were attached in the email that Danielle (club president) sent out earlier this week. If you are interested in either conference and, for whatever reason, do not have access to these documents, please let a club officer know and we can take care of that for you.

**If you wish to attend any of the above conferences with the Anth Club, please let Danielle know ASAP, as we need a definite headcount in order to apply for extra funding to help cover expenses!!
