Below are the minutes from our second meeting on October 9th, 2006. We got an update from all committees.
Minutes – October 9, 2006
- Send around sign-in sheet
- Officer Reports:
- Caroline (President) - No report
- Lee (Vice-President) - Went home ill
- Melissa (Treasurer) - We have $785 in our club funds account. Woo! Side note from Kelly: any trips that are going to be held before February 18th that require SGA funds need to have the proper paperwork turned in by November 4th. This affects our small trip but not the big trip. See OSAS for more information.
- Jessalyn (Secretary/Webmaster) - Just a reminder, minutes are posted on the club website and a reminder email will be sent to the club listserv as well as the facebook group that they have gone up.
- Committee Reports:
- Speaker - nothing planned yet, need ideas, something having to do with archaeology, grad school? Will have a speaker in November.
- Social - nothing planned yet, haven’t really met. Many people from this committee did not show up to the meeting (I think only one person attended). We need something for October ASAP! It can be as simple as a movie night. There are also some Pagan Holidays that can be celebrated. Great ideas that were formulated: trick or treating for the bread basket or the womens crisis center (we would ask for canned goods, non-perishable items, etc. instead of candy). The womens crisis center definitely doesn’t get as much “attention/publicity” as the Flinthills Breadbasket does so they may be the better choice.
- Small Trip - Want to do a bunch of stuff in one trip. Dimsom = small bites. We could go to Kansas City for a Chinese brunch on the Plaza at Bowlins (sp?) where you try all sorts of good food that is brought out to you on little trays. Can get a little pricey but might be able to work something out. We would drive to Kansas City on a Friday afternoon and attend First Fridays which is where all these galleries are opened, lots of food, etc. with dynamic groups of people. Only cost is food! The next morning to Dimson at 11am on the Plaza then head back on I-70 and stop at the Anthropology Museum (open to students but need a reservation). Need to figure out where we would stay the night Friday? Possibly have slumber parties in the living rooms of students parents homes who hail from KC! The date we want to do this is November 3rd. What funds do we want to use for this? Kelly and Melissa will get together and discuss. Watch for emails about this because it will happen before our next meeting.
- Big Trip - We have 3 options that we have detailed out. Please vote for 1 using the comment box! Only vote for your most desired destination/trip:
- Zion, Utah. Summer trip. It’s in the SW of Utah so it could be 20+ hour drive! Could become costly due to gas, camping fees (expensive), entrance fees (expensive) due to the fact that it is a National Park.
- Chaco Canyon. Summer trip. 1 vehicle costs $8 to enter (everyone in car included, not per person). Camping is $10 per night or group sites are available that accomodate 10-30 people. There are back country trails, petroglyphs, stairways, ranger guided tours, Pueblo Bonito, free self-guided tours, Navajo nation, Zuni Pueblo, and more.
- American Indian Mounds. This would be a trip closer to home. Stops include Columbia Missouri for museums/festivals/art/etc; Collinsville Missouri for camping/Cahokia mounds; Tupelo Mississippi for Pharr mounds and camping at Elvis Presley Lake and Campground; Jackson Mississippi for Boyd Mounds/Pocahontas mounds; Greenville Mississippi for Winterville mounds and Holliday Landing campgrounds; then on to Tulsa Oklahoma for camping and various events and festivals held throughout the entire summer. Total miles on the trip are 1587 miles, total driving hours are 27.5, mound sites visited = 5, and the estimated cost per person is $90-$100 (not factoring in SGA or club funding). That estimated cost includes gas and camping fees but does not include food or souvenirs. Members who has paid their $5/semester dues will be eligible for club funds while members who have not paid their dues will have to pay their share out of their own pocket (hint hint–>pay your dues!! It’s $10 total!!!)
- Please vote on 1 of the 3 options above by leaving a comment below!! Your vote is due no later than Monday October 16 at 5pm.
-
Conference - will be good for resume building, practice presenting research, etc. The name of the conference will be “Sapiens Symposium”. Limited to undergrad papers. Open to all Anthropology, International Studies, Cultural Studies, and Womens’s Studies majors. Abstract submissions are due by January 15, 2007. The conference is going to be held March 29, 2007 but the KSU Union does not have 2 rooms open on that date so the date and/or location of the conference is subject to change!
-
Fundraiser - Diana is home with a fever so Caroline spoke in her place. We have 3 fundrasing activities in the works here:
-
Pizza Hut sometime in October: we would go there and bus tables for an evening. We aren’t sure if we get wages from it or if we just get to keep our tips? Not sure. Could do 5-10pm and do it shifts so someone isn’t stuck longer than 3 hours. More details later.
-
Spaghetti Feed sometime in November: it was decided that this should be done on a Sunday. Dorms don’t serve food on Sundays so students are on their own. Great time to snag them for some spaghetti! We want to look into “borrowing” a kitchen from the dorms or Smurthwaite Scholarship house to cook the food in.
-
Bramlage Cleanup: look for emails on this. This is a fun opportunity! It’s physical labor but it’s not hard. If lots of people come then it goes REALLY fast. Music playing over speakers. Very satisfying work! Plus we make the MOST money off of this fundraiser!!!
-
People decided that Sundays and Thursdays work best but Fridays and Saturdays are also an option. No Mondays because it’s difficult to get people out on that night. Spaghetti should definitely be on a Sunday though.
-
Advertising of any fundraising should definitely include sidewalk chalking. Dorms do not allow fliers up.
-
Club members who help in fundraising will be recognized. Hours will be kept track of and when it comes time for the big trip, you will get “credit” towards the cost of going depending on your service in the club.
-
T-shirts - email will be sent about this. T-shirt designs by next Monday. There will be an inbox by the Anthropology office to put submissions in, OR they can be emailed to Mark at mmchaney@ksu.edu.
-
Club Website (Jessalyn and Adam B.): make sure to check out the very first “blog” post by Dr. Wesch about Netvibes! Make sure to also read the blogs about the functionality of the website. It’s all amazing technology so use it!
Please Note: Committee members need to make sure to attend the meetings. Also, committees need to meet BEFORE the meeting to discuss their responsibilities. There were many committee members missing or who had not gotten together.
Jessalyn Dean - Secretary/Webmaster
My vote for the big trip is the American Indian Mounds, if I can go! I have an internship so I don’t know when that starts and the when the trip will be.
I also vote for the American Indian Mound trip; it’s cheap!!
Chaco Canyon babyyyy. My vote is for that one. Although I might be attaining an internship as well so who knows if I can go. Right after school ends (which is when I think you guys went last year) would be probably the best.
moving emoticons???!!! cool
I would also like to go on the American Indian Mounds trip. But I am biased because I have already been to Chaco and the other trip sounds really expensive!
I vote for Chaco
I’d like to vote for the Chaco Canyon trip. It sounds awesome!
Make it 3 for Indian Mounds
chaco canyon ……. it interests me!
I vote for the mounds first and chaco as a second choice.
I’m not sure whether or not I’ll be going, but I would probably vote for the Indian Mounds, it sounds like there are a lot of possibilities for that trip.
I’m going to go with the Indian Mounds.
the Indian Mounds, hopefully I’ll be able to go.
I vote for Chaco Canyon
