Below are the minutes from our first meeting on August 30th, 2006. We had a great turnout! Thanks for everyones input and for pledging to make this semester a success! We’re going to have a blast
Minutes – August 30, 2006
- Introduction of Officers
- Caroline Chapman – President caroline@ksu.edu
- Lee Redlingshafer – Vice President (absent, will arrive later in meeting) clr9559@ksu.edu
- Jessalyn (Jessie) Dean – Secretary/Webmaster jad0427@ksu.edu
- Melissa Krehbiel – Treasurer krehbie2@ksu.edu
- Professor Michael Wesch – Faculty Advisor and Technology Guru mwesch@ksu.edu
- Member intros – what’s your major, what year are you, and what area of Anthropology is your passion?
- Send around member sign in sheet, sign up for the listserv while you’re at it!
- Plan For The Year: we need to delegate duties! More club member involvement in the process of administering the club. We are forming committees which will include:
- Fundraising
- Social (movie nights? BBQ’s?, etc.)
- Speakers (local anthropologists, etc.)
- Events (should we have a big event to invite all Anthro majors to?)
- Publicity (responsible for getting at least 20 members to come to each meeting)
- Big Trip/Small Trip (i.e. we went to Cahokia, Mesa Verde, etc. so where should we go this year? One would be a weekend small trip the other would be a big week long trip)
- T-Shirts (not THAT important, just need a design, someone to get orders, etc.).
- There will be signup sheets for members to get on a committee at the end of the meeting.
- Comments/Ideas From Professor Wesch:
- Definitely want members to participate, everyone should be on a committee! Email Caroline to get on a committee! You can be on more than 1!!
- Should there be a Grad School Committee? Then these students can prepare a presentation for other students in the club as a panel. They can meet together, study for the GRE together, etc.
- Idea for a big event: have a conference similar to what the AAA (American Anthropological Association) holds each year. Students can come with papers they have written, documentaries they have made, and so on. Awards can be handed out, etc. Will look great on your resume if you present at the conference or help put it together!
- Voting Time!!
- Meeting Times, when do we want to have the meetings and where? Members at the meeting voted and decided that Mondays at 7:00pm would work. We will continue holding the meetings in Waters Hall because it is close to the dorms and it’s got that cool Anthropology Vibe goin’ that we all like so much. Meetings will be held on the first Monday of the month most likely, Caroline will send out an official email with the meeting time coming up. These meetings will be mainly for committee members to come and discuss what they have met about. Everyone is welcome to attend, this is our “regularly scheduled club meeting” but events will occur throughout the semester for all club members to attend who want to.
- Dues? Have them or not? How much? It was $5 a semester last year. Only maybe 20 people paid dues. Doesn’t make our official count look very good to SGA. It was decided my members present at the meeting that dues of $5 a semester would continue to be instated. Paying members could come to “events” that we hold (BBQ’s, conferences if we do those, movie nights, etc.) for free. Their dues basically pay for their participation in those events. Non-paying members would be charged a fee possibly $2 or so for each event they want to attend to cover costs, etc. This is flexible depending on the event. This fee collection would be a great fundraising technique
- Open Discussion/Ideas
- From Jessie: for all of you on Facebook, there is the KSU Anthropology Club group for you to join! There is news and updates there. Once the club website is up and running that will be your main source of information for the club but the group on Facebook is a great tool as well.
- From Caroline: Upcoming Events!!…Evolution: Science a Faith in Conflict, Movies on the Grass, and Introduction to the Islamic Culture. These dates/times can be found on the KSU website or on the KSU Anthropology Club Facebook group for now. If you see any events coming up that you think Anthropology students/club members would be interested in, send them to the listserv, or to Caroline or Jessie.
- From Professor Wesch: possibly have a fun “Disorientation” event. Basically get Anthropology majors to know each other! Sometimes we don’t recognize or know anything about eachother!
- From Melissa: there are amazing resources on campus! Use them! If you see a speaker in a class that you like then ask them to come talk to the club! Also, there are other interest groups on campus (SEA) that have similar goals as us, we could team up with those clubs for joint events, etc. Work together!!
- Meeting finished with eating snacks, mingling, and committee signups.
