Discovery Center/Museum Workshop and Public Meeting

Posted by Webmaster in general

If you are potentially interested in a museum career, I strongly encourage you to participate in the following activity (see below). As you may or may not know, Manhattan is exploring the idea of developing a Discovery Center/Museum.  The City has hired professional museum consultants to evaluate the feasibility of such a center and develop ideas should it be built. They have been meeting with City staff and the public and will continue to do so for another month or so. I have found the process to be very enlightening. This is a unique opportunity to learn about what goes on in the development and functioning of a museum. There is yet another opportunity on October 15 to see how exhibit ideas are developed (as a participant in this process or an observer). If this sounds somewhat intriguing to you, read on and volunteer for this workshop. (If you can’t participate in the workshop, certainly plan on attending the open public meeting!)

(I will also be attending and would be happy to provide an introduction for you if you are interested, but arrangements must be made in advance.)

We are seeking a small group of five to ten volunteers to join the Steering Committee for an exhibit design visioning workshop on October 15, 2008. The visioning workshop will be conducted by Hilferty and Associates, our exhibit design consultants, and will involve brainstorming exhibits for the Discovery Center. Here is a statement from Hilferty that describes the workshop:

“Based on the selected institutional structure, we will lay the groundwork for all the efforts to follow. During this workshop we will seek the answers to such questions as: Who is it for? What do you intend to say? How will it be organized? We will conduct a brainstorming session to define exhibit and visitor experiences ideas. We will also begin to determine how to create identifiable measurements of success. This process will result in a Visitor Experience Diagram (bubble diagram) that will show important adjacencies between programmatic components. From this information we will also begin to conceive the signature experiences that make the stories exciting and accessible to your audience.”

The workshop will be held on October 15th in the afternoon and early evening. A time and location have not been finalized, but participants should plan on devoting five hours. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Lauren Palmer, Assistant City Manager at (785) 587-2404 or palmer@ci.manhattan.ks.us.

As a reminder, the next public meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 14. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. in Banquet Room A of the KSU Alumni Center. Please plan to attend and encourage others to participate.
