Anthropology Club

We had an excellent turnout at our first club meeting of 2010!! It was lovely to see so many new faces and we hope to meet many more of you as the semester continues! Listed below are the main topics discussed at the meeting:

Conferences:
If you are planning on attending one of the three conferences listed below (SALSA;CSAS;SAA), you MUST send Danielle your confirmation by Wednesday, Feb. 3. We need a final headcount by this date as we are trying to acquire funding (which is always a BIG help to student pocketbooks) for these trips. Information about these conferences can be found below as well as on our AnthClub facebook page.

Next Club Meeting:
Our next club meeting will take place on Thursday, Feb. 25 at Hannah’s house (directions can be found on the facebook page) from 8-10pm. The plan is to take care of any necessary “club stuff” before spending a relaxing evening getting to know new faces (of which we hope to see many!), munching on snacks, and taking full advantage of Hannah’s RockBand.

Informational Session:
The AnthClub is hosting an Archeology Field School Informational Session on Thursday, Feb. 4 from 2:30-3:30. We will be meeting in Waters 329 to hear some fellow anthros (Greta Kliewer, Kale Yoder, and Christy Mog) talk about their previous field school experience. Professor Logan will also be available to discuss the KSU Archaeological Field School taking place this summer in Leavenworth, Kansas. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about anthropological field schools and to hear about the first hand experience of our fellow students!

Telefund:
It’s that time of the year again! The KSU Telefund will be taking place at the Union on Thursday, Feb. 11 from 5-9:30pm. The Telefund has been a KSU tradition since 1980 and, according the the KSU Foundation, is “the largest all-volunteer student calling program for higher education.” The Telefund provides an opportunity to connect with alumni and friends while at the same time helping to collect donations to be used towards student programs and support. We are still looking for 6-8 more individuals to help out with this event. If your available/interested, please contact Professor Wesch and let him know.

Upcoming Events:
We have a TON of upcoming events this semester! Please see the list below or check out our AnthClub facebook page for more information. Other event ideas brought up at the meeting included Atlatl throwing with Professor Ritterbush and Professor Logan, Flint Knapping, a workout/dance lesson from the Yosakoi Dance Group (http://ksuyosakoi.wordpress.com/), and a trip to the theatre for the upcoming movie Babies, which follows the lives of four babies from four different countries and very different cultural backgrounds. As usual, we are always excited to hear suggestions and ideas for club activities and events. Please contact any of the club officers if you have any you’d like to share!

For the fourth year in a row, the Anthropology Club will host the Sapiens
Symposium. We are asking all interested undergraduate students to
submit abstracts to dvaughn@ksu.edu by Friday, March 5. This event
has been great in the past, and we hope to make this year another
fantastic one! If you don’t know what the Sapiens Symposium is, here is
a description from previous years:

The Sapiens Symposium is an event dedicated to a collaboration of
student knowledge concerning issues of human experience and
interaction. Through the exchange of wisdom, the Sapiens Symposium
serves as a platform for like-minded individuals to present and discuss
topics that each find important to their respective field of study. It
is in the hopes of its organizers that the Sapiens Symposium will
cultivate an increased awareness of and tolerance for the many facets
of the human condition in a global village.

What are the benefits of presenting at the Sapiens Symposium?
* The Sapiens Symposium is a great opportunity to gain experience
presenting your own research to your peers and distinguished
professionals.

* It is also a great opportunity to put the final touches on your research for
those considering presenting at the Central States Anthropological
Society conference in April in Madison, Wisconsin or
submitting their paper for the Anthropology department’s Ibn Battuta award.

* You will have a unique chance for your peers and faculty to comment on
your research in an open atmosphere of constructive criticism, offering
suggestions for improvement and comments on excellence.

Open to ALL Anthropology, American Ethnic Studies, International
Studies, Cultural Studies, and Women’s Studies Majors.

Welcome back! Hope everyone had a good winter break. The Anthropology Club has a TON of upcoming events this semester which we are all very excited to share with you!! Listed below are a few of the major events (courtesy of Danielle’s email sent out earlier this week):

Activities Carnival
When: Thursday January 21st from 6-8 pm
Where: 2nd floor of the Union
What: This is our chance to tell people why our club is awesome and to recruit new members! Also, we will have the anthro club t-shirts available, so if you haven’t had a chance to buy one ($15) yet this is one opportunity to do so.
Other: I have actually had plenty of people already volunteer to help out, but if you’d like to help we definitely won’t say no If you’d prefer to just stop by and say ‘hi’ that is great too! We’ll have candy (this should be incentive in itself)!!

1st Club Meeting of Spring 2010
When: Thursday January 28th from 8 pm — whenever you want to leave (no later than 10).
Where: Kale Yoder’s apartment–1122 Kearny (Apt 15)
What: We will be discussing and brainstorming other upcoming events. Once that is done, get ready to jam out to some Beatles Rock Band and hang out/get to know one another. Feel free to bring snacks!

International Potluck
When: Friday February 12th from 6-8 pm
Where: Frith Community Center (Jardine)
What: A relaxing time to mingle with other club members and our wonderful Professors. Bring your favorite international dish to share! Be creative! And feel free to bring friends!

CONFERENCES

SALSA–Symposium about Language and Society
When: March 26-28
Where: University of Texas–Austin, TX
What: A conference in honor of Joel Sherzer. More information can be found here: http://www.utexas.edu/cola/depts/linguistics/news/2209
Cost: Pre-registration for students is $25. Other costs would include hotel room(s), gas, and food. This is a self-funded trip, so the cost would be split amongst whoever went.

CSAS–Central States Anthropological Society
When: April 7-11
Where: Madison, Wisconsin
What: CSAS is a student-friendly conference covering a variety of different topics. A lot of our club members will be presenting this year, so come and show your support. More info can be found here: http://www.creighton.edu/groups/csas/annualmeeting/index.php
Cost: The club will (most likely) cover the pre-registration fee of $40. Additional costs would be the hotel, gas (split amongst car), and food. The club will *hopefully* be able to cover most of the hotel.

SAA–Society for American Archaeology
When: April 14-18
Where: St. Louis, Missouri
What: The 75th Anniversary meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. This is essential for students wishing to pursue a career in archaeology. More information can be found here: http://www.saa.org/AbouttheSociety/AnnualMeeting/tabid/138/Default.aspx
Cost: Online registration and registration forms can be found here: http://saa.org/AbouttheSociety/AnnualMeeting/PreliminaryProgram/tabid/187/Default.aspx. The pre-registration fee is $140 and the club will be able to cover some of this fee. Other costs would include hotel, gas, and food.

*Registration forms for SALSA and CSAS conferences were attached in the email that Danielle (club president) sent out earlier this week. If you are interested in either conference and, for whatever reason, do not have access to these documents, please let a club officer know and we can take care of that for you.

**If you wish to attend any of the above conferences with the Anth Club, please let Danielle know ASAP, as we need a definite headcount in order to apply for extra funding to help cover expenses!!
