Becky’s First Video
Jan 22nd, 2007 by Becky
YouTubed in the name of viddlers “encoding errors”…This video is my first attempt at linking commercial footage to my own video of popular technology as used today. The original idea was to make technology seem like a horrible narcotic with the musical help of Benny Benassi. Unfortunately, the audio quality of my videos are as of yet no match for mp3s and i have yet to learn how to negotiate that difference. It was almost awkward to have the interview in what was turning into a music video, as the quality and pace of speech mixed poorly with the music…though in the future I will most definitely include the interviews, which would improve upon my target theme and give some explaination, rather than just “looking neat.” Furthermore, my original musical selection disagreed with Vegas, causing the first day to be an uninspired, silent, and unproductive attempt.. which was actually a wonderful thing because the current song, Yeah Yeah by Bodyrox, made a much better muse. I’d also like to experiment more with the features of Vegas, as I pretty much used the “Darth Fader” technique for every transition.
Overall, however, I had a wonderful time making this and would love to continue with the theme. It was ironic how on some instances, especially in the nokia commercial, there were already allusions to “seduction and addiction.”

Perhaps i should stretch out the back end so that the dell logo lasts at least another 2 seconds after the music stops..
There seems to be an interesting implicit commentary here about how new media (like iPods, laptops, etc.) are actually advertised as extensions of ourselves (something McLuhan talks about). It’s like they are comming (commodifying) us and selling us right back to ourselves as a new spiffed-up techno-fied version of ourselves. It’s like I’m me, but then there’s me with my iPod, which is me 2.0. “Dell: Purely You.”
