Kapit, Borneo;
1957

In small towns, professional clerks sit before open windows, reading & writing. I noticed one who was plugging his ears with his fingers while he read aloud. I was told this was done at the request of the listener who didn't want to share his letter with the reader.

An 18th century missionary in California sent loaves of bread to a colleague, along with a note stating their number. The native messenger ate part of the bread & his theft was consequently discovered. Another time, when the same messenger was sent with four loaves, he ate two, but hid the accompanying letter under a stone while he was thus engaged, believing his conduct would not be revealed this time, as the letter hadn't seen him eating the loaves.
