Those who find the physical & social environments too demanding, too messy, sometimes seek to live, as far as possible, within media environments. Arthur Bremer, the
would-be assassin of George Wallace, wrote in a school essay: "I
would like to think that I was living with a television family and there
was no yelling at home and no one hit me." Recently at a U.S.
Army base in Germany, the commanding officer attributed the high divorce
rate among his troops to the lack of English-language TV. "That means
a soldier and his wife have got to talk to each other in the evenings,
and suddenly they discover they really don't like each other." I saw a girl, on video tape, talking directly into the camera:
